Opel has just released the first official images of the new Opel Corsa. A model, although starting from the base of the current model, has undergone so many changes so extensive that it can be considered a completely new model. It will be the fifth element of a family that has already been active for 32 years and has almost 12 million units sold in Europe alone.

On the outside, the front design is in line with the Opel ADAM, while the rear features a more up-to-date styling and horizontally oriented headlamps. At the front, there is a prominent grille and light groups that include the “wing” signature through LED lighting. A feature that is part of Opel's new stylistic language. Only the body profile can reveal some similarities with the generation still in operation.

Completely overhauled interior: IntelliLink does the house honor

But it was inland that Opel made the biggest break with the past. The all-new cabin features well-defined elongated lines and sophisticated materials. With a focus on ergonomics, well-being and a quality environment, the interior of the new Corsa was centered on a dashboard designed with horizontal lines that visually reinforce the space inside. The IntelliLink system, with a seven-inch color touchscreen, is located in the center console. A system that allows the connection of external devices, both iOS (Apple) and Android, and accepts voice commands.

Among the many applications available are BringGo for navigation and Stitcher and TuneIn for Internet radio and podcasts. Opel also proposes a 'dock' for 'smartphones', which allows you to fix the devices and recharge their batteries.

The new Corsa generation also offers a complete range of driver assistance systems. These are the bi-xenon directional headlamps, the blind angle alert and the Opel Eye camera – with traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, automatic dipped/high beam, distance indication to the vehicle in front and alert of imminent collision. To ensure maximum safety, the collision alert uses a red warning light that is projected onto the windshield.

New range of engines: 1.0 Turbo ECOTEC is the company's star

One of the biggest highlights of the fifth generation Corsa (‘E’) is under the hood. It is the brand new 1.0 Turbo three-cylinder, with direct gasoline injection, an engine that is part of the vast engine renewal plan that Opel launched recently. A new 1.0 Turbo ECOTEC petrol engine equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox debuts. This new three-cylinder engine with direct injection will have a power of 90 or 115 hp. This thruster uses the latest technology and is the only 1.0 tricylinder in series production to have a balance shaft, with clear advantages in terms of smoothness and vibrations.

In the ex-factory range, the engine lineup will include a new 1.4 Turbo with 100 hp of power and 200 Nm of maximum torque, as well as new evolutions of the well-known 1.2 and 1.4 atmospheric’ engines. The turbodiesel option will consist of the 1.3 CDTI, available in two power levels: 75 hp and 95 hp. It should be noted that the diesel variants were completely revised and now comply with the Euro 6 emission standard. At launch, the more economical Corsa version – with 95 hp, five-speed manual transmission and Start/Stop – will emit only 89 g/km of CO2. In the spring of 2015 other low-emission versions will appear.

Both versions of the direct injection 1.0 Turbo will be fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox that is brand new and extremely compact. Also part of the range will be the latest six-speed automatic transmission and a new robotic manual transmission Easytronic 3.0, more efficient and smooth.

Full control: new suspension and new steering

New chassis and steering systems: For driving experience compares

With new suspension and steering, straight-line and cornering stability has been improved thanks to a 5mm lower center of gravity, stiffer sub-frame and new suspension geometry. The evolutions operated in terms of damping also give it greater capacity to filter and absorb road irregularities. This evolution is one of the most important in the entire project.

As in the current Corsa, the chassis can have two configurations: Comfort and Sport. The Sport option will have 'harder' springs and dampers, as well as different steering geometry and calibration, ensuring more direct response.
