Subaru boxer engine celebrates 50 years

Let's go back to May 1966. At the time when the Subaru 1000 was launched (in the image below) a model that excelled for the technological innovation used, namely by the independent suspension system and of course… by boxer engine or from opposite cylinders.

Developed by Fuji Heavy Industries — a company that from April 1, 2017 will be renamed Subaru Corporation — the front-wheel drive compact paved the way for the models that followed. It was the first chapter of a story that continues to this day!

Since then, at the “heart” of all models launched by Subaru has been the boxer engine. According to the brand, engines with symmetrically placed front-to-front cylinders benefit fuel consumption, the vehicle's dynamics and response (due to the low center of gravity), reduce vibrations and are safer in the event of an accident.

With over 16 million vehicles produced, the Boxer engine has become a hallmark of Subaru. Not being the only brand that uses these engines, it is perhaps the most faithful to this architecture.
