BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. The missing "family" member

Anonim

Started last year with the unveiling of the 4 Series Coupé and 4 Series Cabrio, just now, with the arrival of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé , is that the renewal of the Series 4 range can be considered as complete.

Based on the CLAR platform, the same as its sportier “brothers” and the i4 tram, the 4 Series Gran Coupé has grown compared to its predecessor.

At 4783 mm in length, 1852 mm in width and 1442 mm in height, the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is 143 mm longer, 27 mm wider and 53 mm taller than its predecessor, with a further 46 mm in distance between axles (fixed at 2856 mm).

"Family" look

On the outside, it is not difficult to find (many) similarities between the new BMW proposal and… its electric “brother”, the BMW i4 — on the outside they are essentially the same car — with both models being produced on the same production line in Munich.

At the front, the main highlight goes to the controversial grille introduced by the 4 Series Coupé and Cabrio and which here, together with the slender headlights, helps the 4 Series Gran Coupé to achieve a clear distinction from the 3 Series.

At the rear, the Series 4 Gran Coupé takes on the same stylistic solutions already seen in the coupé and convertible, being practically identical to the i4 (except for some finishes and… exhaust outlets).

Equipped as standard with the BMW Live Cockpit Plus, the 4 Series Gran Coupé features an 8.8” center screen and a 5.1” digital instrument panel. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional features a 10.25” center screen and a 12.3” digital instrument panel.

As for the interior, this is identical to the 4 Series that we already knew. The trunk has 470 liters, 39 liters more than in the previous generation.

Enhanced Dynamics

As you'd expect, with a BMW, one of the main focuses in the development of the new 4 Series Gran Coupé was dynamic handling, with BMW promising to outperform its predecessor.

At the base of this “confidence” are the low center of gravity, weight distribution close to the ideal 50:50, a stiffer chassis with specific tuning and the (optional) adaptive M Sport suspension.

Optimized aerodynamics: active “flaps” (on the grid and bottom) that open and close as needed; air curtains; and a practically faired bottom allow an aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cx) of just 0.26, 0.02 less than its predecessor.

And the engines?

In the field of engines, the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé comes with three petrol and one diesel options, all of which are associated with an automatic transmission with eight gears.

The diesel engine range is based on a 2.0 l four-cylinder engine that is combined with a 48 V mild-hybrid system. With 190 hp and 400 Nm, this engine is available in the 420d Gran Coupé and 420d xDrive Gran Coupé with all-wheel drive .

As for gasoline, the offer starts with the four-cylinder in-line used by the 420i Gran Coupé which, with 2.0 l of capacity, produces 184 hp and 300 Nm. The BMW 430i Gran Coupé debuts a new four-cylinder also with 2.0 l, but that delivers 245 hp and 400 Nm, with the exhaust manifold integrated in the cylinder head to reduce emissions.

Finally, at the top of the range comes the M440i xDrive Gran Coupé. This uses a mild-hybrid, in-line six-cylinder, with 374 hp and 500 Nm of torque, which is sent to all four wheels through the automatic transmission with eight gears Steptronic Sport (optional on the other 4 Series Gran Coupé). As for the unprecedented M4 Gran Coupé variant, that seems to be guaranteed, although no data has yet been released about it.

Scheduled for arrival on the market in November this year, the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé has yet to see its prices announced.
