Lisbon is (again) the most congested city on the Iberian Peninsula

Since 2008, congestion has increased around the world.

For the sixth year in a row, TomTom has released the results of the Annual Global Traffic Index, a study that analyzes traffic congestion in 390 cities in 48 countries, from Rome to Rio de Janeiro, via Singapore to San Francisco.

NOT TO BE MISSED: We say we hit traffic…

As in the previous year, Mexico City was once again at the top of the ranking. Drivers in the Mexican capital spend (on average) 66% of their extra time stuck in traffic at any time of day (7% more than last year), compared to periods of smooth or non-congested traffic. Bangkok (61%), in Thailand, and Jakarta (58%), in Indonesia, complete the ranking of the most congested cities in the world.

Analyzing TomTom's historical data, we came to the conclusion that traffic congestion has risen by 23 percent since 2008, this worldwide.

And in Portugal?

In our country, the cities worthy of registration are Lisbon (36%), Porto (27%), Coimbra (17%) and Braga (17%). Compared to 2015, the time lost in traffic in the Portuguese capital grew 5%, which makes Lisbon the most congested city on the Iberian Peninsula , just like the year before.

Still, Lisbon is far from being the most congested city in Europe. The ranking of the “old continent” is led by Bucharest (50%), Romania, followed by the Russian cities of Moscow (44%) and St. Petersburg (41%). London (40%) and Marseille (40%) make up the Top 5 on the European continent.
