The new Mercedes-AMG prototype is one of the confirmations at the German brand's stand at the Geneva Motor Show.

Mercedes-AMG celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, but we are the ones who have reason to celebrate. One of these reasons will be the presentation in Geneva of the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept. It will be an unprecedented model in the range of the German manufacturer, and which should use components from the Mercedes-AMG GT. That's right, from the AMG GT.

It is a new four-door model that has long been speculated about. The first patent dates back to 2012, a model still derived from the SLS. Now it has become one of the most cherished projects by Tobias Moers, the big boss of Mercedes-AMG. The production version of the X290 (codename) will thus join the AMG GT in AMG's range of dedicated models. It will have its eyes set on the big German saloons – Porsche Panamera, BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé and Audi A7.

V8 engine with more than 600 hp of power

According to Autocar, the basis for the GT Concept will derive from the MRA modular platform, the same as the C 63, E 63 and S 63. Everything indicates that Mercedes-AMG engineers will pay special attention to the weight and materials used, with the goal of maximizing performance.

Speaking of performance, the 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 block is already known to the AMG GT or the E 63. It may be available in two power levels: the highest should surpass the 612 hp of the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+.

Also according to the British publication, this engine could “marry” with a 48V electric unit and its lithium-ion battery, all in favor of a more efficient start-stop system… but not only. The electric unit can provide up to 20 hp of extra power in short periods of time.
