Jaguar I-Pace. The Formula E-inspired electric SUV

We're making great strides towards the presentation of the Jaguar I-Pace, in its final version. A model that will determine Jaguar's goals in the coming years – if you remember, “the most important model for Jaguar since the iconic E-Type”, according to the brand itself.

In a market still with few proposals but growing fast, the Jaguar I-Pace will face the Tesla Model X, which will be one of its main rivals. In this chapter, Jaguar starts at a disadvantage for the Californian brand, but Jaguar wants to make up for lost time through experience in competition, more specifically in Formula E.

“In Formula E we are in constant competition in all areas, but there is a big crossover with production models when it comes to thermal management. There is a lot we can do in software and algorithms, and we are learning a lot in regenerative braking and in simulations".

Craig Wilson, Director of Jaguar Racing

Simultaneously, in the development of the Jaguar I-Pace, the British brand has collected important information that can also be used for competition, namely the protection system around the high voltage electrical units. Jaguar's electric single-seater will make its debut next year, in the fifth season of Formula E.

Mechanically, the Jaguar I-Pace will be equipped with two electric motors, one on each axle, capable of generating a total of 400 hp of power and 700 Nm of maximum torque on all four wheels. The electric units are powered by a set of 90 kWh lithium-ion batteries which, according to Jaguar, allows a range of more than 500 km (NEDC cycle). It will be possible to recover 80% of charge in just 90 minutes using a 50 kW charger.

The Jaguar I-Pace goes on sale in the second half of 2018, and Jaguar's goal is that in three years, half of its production models will have hybrid or 100% electric options.
