Software update brings more autonomy to Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar set to work and decided to offer a “gift” to the owners of the I-Pace. Taking advantage of the lessons learned from the I-Pace eTrophy and the analysis of real travel data, the British brand developed a software update for its electric SUV.

The objective was to optimize battery management, thermal management and the operation of the all-wheel drive system.

Despite all this having allowed, according to Jaguar, an improvement of 20 km in autonomy, the truth is that the official value remained between 415 and 470 km (WLTP cycle), with the brand opting not to homologate this increase in autonomy.

It's because? Because, as a Jaguar spokesman told Autocar, the brand felt that "the resources that would be needed to carry out the recertification are better invested in the continued development of the products".

What has changed?

For starters, experience gained in the I-Pace eTrophy allowed Jaguar to review the I-Pace's all-wheel drive system. The aim was to make it more efficiently distribute the torque between the front and rear engines when driving in ECO mode.

In terms of thermal management, Jaguar's update made it possible to improve the use of the active radiator grille, closing the “blades” to improve aerodynamics. Finally, in terms of battery management, this update allows the battery to work with a lower charge than before, without affecting its durability or performance.

Created in 2018, the I-Pace eTrophy begins to bear fruit, with the lessons learned there being applied to Jaguar production models.

As for the analysis of data from about 80 million kilometers traveled by the Jaguar I-Pace , this allowed us to review the efficiency of regenerative braking (it started to collect more energy at low speeds) and the autonomy calculation, which became more precise and better reflect the practiced driving style (thanks to a new algorithm).

What do I need to do?

According to Jaguar, for customers to obtain these updates they will have to go to a dealership of the brand. In addition to these updates, I-Pace also saw the remote updates functionality (“Over the Air”) being improved.

For now, it is not known when these updates will be available here nor if they will have any associated cost.
