BMW Introduces 1 Series Prototype With Water Injection System

The water injection system aims to cool the combustion chamber in higher regimes.

The Bavarian brand has just presented a prototype of the BMW 1 Series (pre-restyling), equipped with a 1.5 turbo gasoline engine with 218hp, which uses the innovative water injection system at the intake. This system has a very simple purpose: to cool the temperature in the combustion chamber, reduce consumption and increase power.

Today, to lower the temperature in the combustion chamber and increase power at higher revs, modern engines inject more fuel into the mixture than would ideally be needed. This causes consumption to soar and engine efficiency to decrease. This water injection system does away with the need to provide that extra amount of fuel.

Operation is relatively simple. According to BMW, the system stores the water condensed by the air conditioning in a tank – an evolution compared to the first system, which needed manual refueling. Subsequently, it injects the water collected at the inlet, reducing the temperature in the combustion chamber to 25º. The Bavarian brand claims lower emissions and a power increase of up to 10%.
