WRC 2017: More powerful, lighter and faster

The FIA decided to change the World Rally Regulations for 2017. More spectacle is promised.

This month the FIA announced changes to the World Rally Championship (WRC) that have long been awaited by all mud, snow and asphalt buffs. WRC regulations will change in 2017, and promise to bring with them new features that will change the face of the discipline: more power, more lightness, more aerodynamic support. Anyway, more speed and more spectacle.

WRC cars will get wider (60mm at the front and 30mm at the rear) and larger aerodynamic appendages will be allowed, all factors that will contribute to a more aggressive look and greater stability. In turn, the self-locking central differentials will also be able to use electronic control and the minimum weight of the cars went down to 25kg.

With stability improved in every way, only one thing is missing: more power. The 300hp 1.6 Turbo blocks will continue, but with more permissive turbo restrictors: 36mm instead of 33mm while the maximum authorized pressure is increased to 2.5 bar.

Result? The maximum power rises from the current 300hp to a value around 380hp of power. Good news for all lovers of the sport, who can now watch races with more spectacular and virile cars – a bit like the late Grupo B.
