The first images of the new Ford Mondeo appeared on the website of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which will be produced in China, as a result of a joint venture between Ford and Changan.
The fifth-generation Ford Mondeo is expected to begin marketing in China in the second quarter of 2022, but there are no plans for marketing it in Europe, to succeed the model still on sale.
Thus, the decision to end the production of the «European» Mondeo in March 2022 without a direct successor is maintained.
If the chances of this new made in China model reaching Europe are negligible, the same cannot be said of the North American market, where the possibility of taking the place of Fusion (the American Mondeo), which is no longer marketed in 2020.
Mondeo, "brother" of Evos
These first images may not be official for the brand, but they reveal the final model and show a four-door sedan visually very close to the Evos, the five-door crossover, unveiled last April at the Shanghai Motor Show.
The biggest differences between the two turn out to be, precisely, in the rear volume — three volumes in the Mondeo and two and a half volumes in the Evos — and also in the absence of additional plastic protections on the Mondeo and in its lower ground clearance.
At the back, the optics show a clear Mustang inspiration.
The images also show two versions of the Mondeo, one of them the ST-Line, with a sportier appearance that is distinguished, among others, by larger wheels (19″), a black roof and a rear spoiler.
Inside, although there are no images, it is confirmed that it will use the 1.1 m wide screen that we saw on the Evos which actually consists of two screens: a 12.3″ for the instrument panel and another 27″ for the infotainment system.
The new Ford Mondeo, like the Evos, sits on the C2, the same platform as the Focus, but being positioned one segment above (D), it is substantially larger: 4935 mm in length, 1875 mm in width, 1500 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2954 mm. It is larger than the "European" Mondeo in all dimensions.
In this breakout of images and information about the new model, it was also learned that it will be equipped with a 2.0 l turbo gasoline engine with 238 hp, but will also receive a 1.5 l turbo, as well as a hybrid proposal plugin.
