Cold Start. An electric with a manual box? BYD e3 does, but…

Anonim

This version of BYD e3 it dispenses with the gearbox typical of electric cars and in its place we find a five-speed manual gearbox, which does not even lack the clutch pedal.

Electric motors do not, as a rule, need multi-ratio transmissions (manual or automatic) due to the instantaneous availability of torque from electric motors (although it can be useful to have more than one ratio, as the Porsche Taycan has already demonstrated).

So what prompted BYD to put a manual transmission on their e3?

BYD e3

Is that this version of BYD e3 was developed specifically for… driving schools. And, interestingly, it came to respond to the wishes of many future drivers who wanted to learn how to operate a manual transmission.

It remains to be seen in more detail how this manual transmission and electric motor work together, but we know that there are several driving modes: Economy, Teaching, Throttle Lock and Sports (this is only available in the automatic version).

Given the specificity of this version, whether manual or automatic (not missing a second brake pedal on the instructor's side), it is not available for sale to the public.
