The new member of the A5 family was finally introduced to the public at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show.

There were three big news that Audi has reserved for this year's edition of the Detroit Motor Show. The first was the Audi Q8 prototype, which anticipates the future of the ring brand, and the second was the latest Audi SQ5, already in production, with the same power but more torque than the model. previous. The third element of this "offensive trident" is the new Audi A5 Convertible.

As we advanced at the end of last year, regarding the passage of the German sports car through the curves and corners of the Serra da Arrábida – if you don't know what we're talking about, click here – the new Audi A5 Cabriolet uses the MLB platform. As such, it is not surprising that in this new generation, the A5 Cabriolet shares all its qualities with the coupé variant, which we already had the opportunity to test last year.

So what's the difference for the Audi A5 Coupé?

Excluding the cabriolet bodywork, obviously, the differences with the coupé are few. But it is compared to the previous generation that the Audi A5 Cabriolet stands out the most, starting with its proportions.

The German convertible has grown in length to 4,673 mm (47 mm more) and its wheelbase to 2,760 mm (another 14 mm), values that allow for increased legroom in the rear seats and luggage capacity to 380 liters (+60 liters). Although larger, the Audi A5 Cabriolet weighs 40 kg less than its predecessor and achieves greater structural rigidity.

As for the hood, the new electric drive system allows the hood to be retracted in just 15 seconds and up to a maximum speed of 50 km/h.

In mechanical terms, in this "open-air" version, we will continue to rely on the already known range of engines that equipped the rest of the A5 family, including the block 3.0 V6 TFSI with 354 hp that equips the sports variant, the S5 Cabriolet . With this engine, it will be possible to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds – slower than the 4.7 seconds of the Audi S5 Coupé, it is true, but still a clear evolution in relation to its predecessor.

The new Audi A5 Cabriolet and S5 Cabriolet are scheduled to arrive on the national market in May.
