Alfa Romeo decided to present the world with an open-air version of its four-cylinder “super sports” mini. Meet the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Concept.
In Italian lands, it seems sacrilegious to produce a mid-engined sports car and not give the lucky driver the option of steering his hair in the wind. Well, Alfa Romeo did not disappoint, and gave up the roof on its rear-wheel drive sports car, surprising Geneva with the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Concept.
As is known, spider versions need to be reinforced at a structural level, and by reinforced we mean the increase in chassis rigidity together with a not so desired increase in weight. Amazingly, not even the structural reinforcement was able to make the 4C Spider pass the 1000kg total weight. The booster added just 60 kg to the weight of the covered version, thus totaling a light 955 kg in total weight.
Open skies in a mid-engined car means that the happy driver hears the “engine room” more clearly. Not that it was bad to hear the 240hp turbo-compressed engine that powers the 4C, but Alfa Romeo decided to improve the experience even further with a new exhaust system made of titanium and carbon, approved by Akrapovic. The new system also includes an electrical valve system, which optimizes the engine's performance, as well as improving the well-known symphony.
In addition to the more obvious changes, a closer look reveals a set of redesigned wheels and new optics that discard the multi-LED concept that was the target of some criticism in the covered version, opting for a more uniform design. These new optics are, of course, made of carbon fiber.
Production of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider will start at the end of 2015. Alfa Romeo classifies this concept as a “preliminary design”. In your opinion, are more changes needed in this 4C Spider?
