Peugeot 308. All-electric version arrives in 2023

Introduced about two weeks ago, the new Peugeot 308, now in its third generation, has emerged with a more sophisticated look than ever and redoubled ambitions. With over 7 million units sold, the 308 is one of Peugeot's most important models.

When it hits the market, in a few months — everything indicates that it will start hitting the main markets in May, the 308 will have available, right from the start, two plug-in hybrid engines. But the electrification potential of this model is not exhausted here.

The great surprise of the range will be an all-electric version of the Peugeot 308 that will be launched in 2023 to face the Volkswagen ID.3, which Guilherme Costa has already tested on video. Confirmation comes from within Peugeot itself.

When it hits the market, within a few months, the Peugeot 308 will have two plug-in hybrid engines available.

First it was Agnès Tesson-Faget, product director for the new 308, telling Auto-Moto that an electric 308 was in the pipeline. Then Linda Jackson, managing director of Peugeot, confirmed in an interview with L'Argus that a 100% electric variant of the 308 would arrive in 2023.

Now it was Automotive News' turn to “echo” this news, reinforcing everything that had already been advanced so far and quoting a spokesman for the French manufacturer who will have said that “it's still too early” to discuss the details of this variant, including the platform this version will be built on.

The technical details of the all-electric 308 — it should assume the designation e-308 — are still unknown and the platform on which it will be based is, for now, one of the biggest doubts. The new 308 is based on the EMP2 platform for compact and medium models, which only allows plug-in hybrid electrification, so the 100% electric version will have to be based on a different platform, prepared for this type of solution.

The CMP platform, which serves as the basis, among other models, of the Peugeot 208 and e-208, is one of those cases, as it can accommodate Diesel, gasoline and electrical mechanics. Still, it is more likely that this all-electric 308 will receive the next eVMP architecture — Electric Vehicle Modular Platform, a platform for 100% electric models that will debut in the next generation of the Peugeot 3008, which is scheduled to be launched precisely in 2023.

What is known about eVMP?

With a storage capacity of 50 kWh per meter between the axles, the eVMP platform will be able to receive batteries between 60-100 kWh of capacity and its architecture has been optimized in order to use the entire floor to house the batteries.

As for autonomy, the latest information suggests that models that use this platform should have a range between 400 and 650 km (WLTP cycle), depending on its dimensions.

While no further details on the electric version are known, you can always watch or review the Peugeot 308 presentation video, where Guilherme Costa explains, in detail, everything you need to know about the new French family member.
