This BMW 507 was owned by the man who designed it and now it can be yours

THE BMW 507 is one of the rarest models of the German brand. Produced between 1956 and 1959 this was supposed to have sold thousands of units in the United States, but the high price made it a sales flop and in the end only 252 units were produced.

But the BMW 507 is not just a rarity. Much of the appeal of this model comes from its aesthetic, the result of the genius of one man: Albrecht Graf von Goertz, industrial designer. In addition to being the creator of the elegant lines of the 507, he was also the owner of the same unit that Bonhams will be putting up for auction.

But if you want this rare model, it's a good idea to have a full wallet. To give you an idea, this year at Goodwood, a BMW 507 was sold for around 4.9 million dollars (around 4.3 million euros), making it the most expensive BMW ever to be sold in a auction.

In addition to creating the BMW 507, Albrecht Graf von Goertz, he also designed the BMW 503 and worked for Studebacker alongside another big name in design, ‎Raymond Loewy. He then worked as a design consultant for Nissan, but the BMW 507 was really his masterpiece.

As we told you the copy that Bonhams is going to auction next month was owned by the man who designed it. Goertz was not, however, its first owner. This 507 was acquired in Austria in 1958, but it was only in 1971 that it was purchased by Goertz, who kept it until 1985.

In the 90's it underwent a detailed restoration, having meanwhile ended up in a collection in Germany.

This specimen is a Series II and is painted in a striking red. Under the hood it has a 3.2 l V8 engine that produces 150 hp. Thanks to its moderate weight (only 1280 kg) the BMW 507 was able to reach a maximum speed of around 200 km/h and fulfill 0 to 100 km/h in 11s.

Given the rarity of the model and the fact that it was owned by the author of its lines, Bonhams predicts that at the auction, which will take place on December 1st, this BMW 507 will be sold for around 2.2 million pounds (approximately of 2.47 million euros).
