A sausage? It's been like that since the 70s. Volkswagen has been producing Currywurst sausages for over 45 years, alongside its car plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. The sausages are mostly for internal consumption — namely by company employees — but they are also sold abroad.
Is Volkswagen an automobile brand that produces sausages, or a sausage brand that produces automobiles? All kidding aside, last year Volkswagen produced a total of 6.2 million cars worldwide. Meanwhile, the Wolfsburg sausage factory has produced 6.8 million sausages.
So, once again, the most sold product by the German brand was not a car… it was food.
But how did Volkswagen get into the sausage business? It's simple to explain: the German brand's finance department came to the conclusion that it was cheaper to produce the sausages that feed its thousands of employees than to purchase them from an outside supplier.
