Special limited edition to celebrate 35 years of the BMW M5

The recipe is simple: in just one car, combine the comfort and functionality of a four-door saloon with the benefits and dynamics of a high-performance machine. Easier said than done is what essentially sums up the first BMW M5.

By equipping the 5 Series (E28) with the M1's inline six-cylinder block 35 years ago, BMW eventually created a new category of machines, the super saloons. Since then the BMW M5 has been the yardstick by which everyone else is measured. The culmination of the lineage is currently represented by the BMW M5 Competition (F90).

To commemorate such a noble lineage, which spans six generations and 35 years, BMW created the commemorative edition M5 Edition 35 Jahre … and it feels more badass than ever.

The M5 Edition 35 Jahre

Blame it on the Frozen Dark Grey paintwork, which uses a special pigmentation, creating a silky matte surface, which gives the M5 a more menacing look. Also unique are the M 20″ wheels with Y-shaped Graphite Gray spokes. The brake calipers are in glossy black or gold, if you choose carbon-ceramic brake discs.

The exclusivity continues in the interior, where we can find, for the first time, vast surfaces (instrument panel, doors, center console) in textured aluminum with a carbon structure and coated in an anodised golden tone. The door sills also bear the inscription “M5 Edition 35 Jahre” and the cover of the cup holders is laser engraved with the inscription “M5 Edition 35 Jahre 1/350”.

As you can guess from this last entry, the BMW M5 Edition 35 Jahre will be limited to 350 units.

Under the bonnet, all the same

The starting point for this limited edition was the current M5 Competition, showing no differences for this one in the mechanical or dynamic chapter — not that this is bad news… The M5 Competition is in itself an improvement of the “regular” M5.

Under the bonnet lives a 4.4 V8 twin turbo with 625 hp and 750 Nm , transmitted to the four wheels through an automatic eight-speed transmission. Enough to launch it up to 100 km/h in just 3.3s and up to 200 km/h in no less impressive 10.8s.

In addition to the M xDrive system, we also find an Active M Differential active. Despite the four-wheel drive, the M5 has a driving mode that lets you disconnect the front axle, for those who prefer to mercilessly torture the rear axle tires.
