Volkswagen Arteon R. Is the mythical VR6 back?

According to Car Throttle, the Wolfsburg brand is hard at work on a pre-production prototype of the Volkswagen Arteon R. Its production has not yet been approved but should get the "green light" soon. The guarantee was given by one of the responsible for the brand, Martin Hube, a spokesman for Volkswagen.

For the time being just described as a prototype, the Volkswagen Arteon R should use a new variant of the mythical VR6 engine, now with 3.0 liters of capacity and an associated turbo. An engine that was even one of the stars of the 2013 Wörthersee Festival and that in the meantime seemed doomed to oblivion.

As you may remember (you can reread it here), the acronym VR resulted from the junction of the letter V referring to the engine's architecture, with the letter R for Reihenmotor — which in Portuguese means in-line engine. Basically, the materialization of the two solutions in a single block. The angle of the V is so tight that the two engine heads merge into one.

Still on this thruster, Car Throttle advances, based on statements by Volkswagen spokesman, Martin Hube, that the VR6 should be able to offer a power of more than 400 hp, distributed to all four wheels through a 4Motion system. The type of transmission to be used, manual or automatic, remains to be determined, but considering the power level of this VR6 Turbo, the safest bet is the dual-clutch automatic transmission.

“I am completely convinced that this combination will work optimally as we have included the latest version of the Haldex four-wheel drive system, which allows you to enjoy a little more oversteer. Fact that will help make the car even more agile and powerful”

Martin Hube, Volkswagen spokesman

However, despite the driving pleasure that a version like this one already announces, the same interlocutor recalls that, at least at this stage, everything is just a chance. Everything is still dependent on the agreement of the highest levels of the brand. Although and if the “green light” appears, there is already the guarantee that it will be a proposal capable, according to Hube, “of leaving the Porsche Panamera behind”.

The thing promises!…
