It wasn't even necessary to wait for the Shanghai Motor Show to start: Volkswagen has just unveiled the new ID Crozz . After the hatchback, presented at the Paris Motor Show, and the «loaf of bread», at the Detroit Motor Show, it was the turn of the German brand to show the third (and which will probably not be the last) element of this family of prototypes 100% electric.
As such, the characteristic elements of this model range are still present (panoramic windows, black rear section, LED luminous signature), in a model with shapes halfway between an SUV and a four-door saloon. The result is a crossover 4625 mm in length, 1891 mm in width, 1609 mm in height and 2773 mm in wheelbase.
Volkswagen had promised a spacious and flexible interior and, judging by the images, the promise was fulfilled. The absence of the B-pillar and the sliding rear doors facilitate entry and exit into the vehicle and give a feeling of space. The German brand suggests that the new I.D. Crozz has an interior space equivalent to the new Tiguan Allspace.

As the I.D. Buzz, also the I.D. Crozz uses a pair of electric motors – one on each axis – totaling 306 hp of power combined with all four wheels. It allows, according to Volkswagen, accelerations from 0 to 100 km/h in less than six seconds. The maximum speed, limited, is around 180 km/h.
This engine is powered by an 83 kWh battery pack that allows an autonomy of up to 500 km in a single load . Speaking of charging, using a 150 kW charger it is possible to charge 80% of the battery in just 30 minutes.

In dynamic terms the bar is high: Volkswagen refers to the I.D. Crozz like “ a model with a dynamic performance comparable to the Golf GTi “. This is due to the new chassis with MacPherson suspension at the front and adaptive suspension at the rear, the low center of gravity and the almost perfect weight distribution: 48:52 (front and rear).
Another of the Volkswagen I.D. Crozz are without a doubt the autonomous driving technologies – I.D. pilot . With a simple push of a button, the multifunction steering wheel retracts into the dashboard, allowing travel without the need for driver interference. In this case, it becomes another passenger. A technology that should only be debuted in production models in 2025 and, of course, after proper regulation.
Is it to produce?
The question is repeated with each prototype that Volkswagen has been presenting in recent months. The answer has varied between “it's possible” and “very likely”, and Volkswagen's chairman of the board, Herbert Diess, once again left everything open:
“If it is possible to make a 100% correct prediction of what the future will be, this is one of those cases. With the ID Crozz we are showing how Volkswagen will transform the market in 2020”.
This is in fact the expected date for the arrival on the market of the first electric vehicle derived from the Volkswagen Group's new MEB platform. It remains to be seen which model will be responsible for debuting this platform, but one thing is certain: will be a Volkswagen model.
