Hyundai Sonata Hybrid also uses the sun to charge the battery

After a few months we have talked to you about Kia's project to install solar panels in cars to charge batteries, Hyundai anticipated, launching the first model with this possibility, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

According to Hyundai, it is possible to charge between 30 to 60% of the battery through the solar charging system on the roof, which not only improves the efficiency of the car but also prevents battery discharge and also allows for a reduction in CO2 emissions.

For now only available on the Sonata Hybrid (which is not sold here), Hyundai intends to extend the solar charging technology to other models in its range in the future.

How it works?

The solar charging system uses a roof-mounted photovoltaic panel structure and a controller. Electricity is generated when solar energy activates the surface of the panel, which is converted to standard electrical voltage by the controller and then stored in a battery.

According to Heui Won Yang, Vice President of Hyundai: “The roof-top solar charging technology is an example of how Hyundai is becoming a clean mobility supplier. This technology allows customers to take an active role in the issue of emissions.”
