Scheduled for the 24th of June, what is one of the most famous ramps in the world, also known as “The Race to the Clouds”, is one of Volkswagen's next challenges. Which, after the disappointment registered in the 80s, with an innovative two-engine Golf, is now returning to the Pikes Peak International Ramp, in the US state of Colorado, to try, once again, to become famous — this time, in electric mode!

Determined to conquer a route of 19.99 km, with 156 curves, and a difference in level of 1440 m, where the goal appears at 4300 m, the German brand built, this time, a 100% electric prototype, which it gave its name in Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak . And of which he has just revealed not only the color, but also the chosen number.

According to the Wolfsburg manufacturer, the race car for Pikes Peak will be completely grayed out, and with the number 94 . Both choices have a good reason to support them!

According to the explanations given by Volkswagen, the choice of gray results from the fact that this is the official color of Volkswagen's electric subbrand, ID, whereas the number 94 is based, solely and only on the position that the letters I and D occupy in the alphabet — the I is the ninth letter, while the D is the fourth.

As is customary in North American motor racing, the organization of the Pikes Peak International Climb allowed us to choose the entry number for the race, and our immediate choice was 94. This is because it symbolizes the letters I and D — the ninth and fourth letters of the alphabet

Meanwhile, Volkswagen's 100% electric prototype is ready to go, with its 680 hp and 650 Nm , attacking Pikes Peak, with defending champion Romain Dumas at the wheel.

Dumas has already set record times in the race held in Colorado Springs on three separate occasions (2014, 2016 and 2017). Right now, the electric record is in the 8min57,118s was fixed in 2016; still, far from the 8min 13.878s , the absolute record achieved by the Peugeot 208 T16 with Sebastien Loeb at the wheel, in 2013.

In addition to the last test carried out by Dumas, whose video we showed you earlier, Volkswagen released another video, explaining why the forms of the I. D. R Pikes Peak.
