This new 2.0 TDI engine may come associated with a 10-speed DSG gearbox.

Volkswagen presented in Wolfsburg (Germany) the latest evolution of the 2.0 TDI engine (EA288) that equips the Group's models.

Directly from Volkswagen's research and development department, this new engine manages to develop 270hp of power from just 4 cylinders and 2 liters of capacity. According to the brand, this is an evolution of the 239hp 2.0 TDI block that will debut in the new generation of the Volkswagen Passat. Regarding the torque Volkswagen did not release values, however, a value around 550Nm is expected.

Unquestionably impressive numbers (270hp and 550Nm) and that are essentially due to three innovations present in this engine. First, a two-phase electric turbo capable of canceling lag at low revs and increasing the response to accelerator requests; secondly, new Piezo injectors capable of pressures above 2,500 bar, which greatly contribute to combustion efficiency; and finally a new valve control system, variable depending on the speed.

Taking advantage of the hype generated around this engine, Volkswagen took the opportunity to announce a new 10-speed DSG gearbox. Code-named DQ551, this gearbox will debut a new energy recovery mechanism and a new “spark” function – allowing the engine to maintain speed at low revs.

Being at a very advanced level of development, it is likely that within a few months we will be able to find this engine in the most recent models of the group. Gone are the days when diesel engines were associated with agricultural machinery.
