Ferrari FXX-K Evo. Even more glued to the asphalt

As if the Ferrari FXX-K were not already the demolition machine that it is, the Italian brand has just presented the FXX-K Evo, which, as the name implies, is an evolution of the machine we already knew.

To access this upgrade pack, current FXX-K 40 customers can upgrade their cars, or the FXX-K Evo can be purchased in its entirety, as it will be produced in extremely limited numbers. Ferrari, however, did not say how many units would be produced.

What evolved in Evo?

In short, the changes made were focused on achieving higher levels of downforce and lighter weight. The downforce values have improved by 23% over the FXX-K, and are 75% higher than the LaFerrari, the road model from which it derives. At 200 km/h the FXX-K Evo is capable of generating around 640 kg of downforce and 830 kg at its maximum speed. According to Ferrari, these values are close to those achieved by the machines that participate in the GTE and GT3 championships.

Specifications

It has not received any mechanical changes, but for what? It still retains the epic V12 NA with HY-KERS system, delivering a total of 1050 hp and more than 900 Nm. The V12 alone achieves 860 hp at 9200 rpm — the equivalent of 137 hp/l. Transmission to the rear wheels is ensured by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Comes equipped with Pirelli PZero slicks — 345/725 - R20x13 is the size of the rear tire. The carbon brakes are 398 mm in diameter at the front and 380 mm at the rear.

These numbers are achieved thanks to a deep aerodynamic overhaul. The FXX-K Evo gets a new fixed rear wing, optimized to work in synergy with the active rear spoiler.

As we can see, this wing is supported by two lateral vertical supports (the fins), as well as by a central fin. This allows for greater stability at low yaw angles, as well as supporting the three triangular-shaped vortex generators. The latter allow to clean the airflow at the rear of the car, allowing greater efficiency of the rear wing, which helps to increase the amount of downforce generated by the rear system by 10%.

Also the front and rear bumpers have been changed, increasing airflow efficiency and generating more downforce — 10% front and 5% rear. Also the car's background was revised, with the addition of vortex generators. These capitalize on the gains made in the front and rear overhauls allowing it to generate 30% more downforce compared to the FXX-K.

More overhauls beyond aerodynamics

To deal with the higher downforce values, the suspension had to be readjusted. The cooling of the brakes has also been optimised, with the redesign of the air intakes for them. Despite the additions we've seen, Ferrari claims the weight has dropped from the FXX-K's 1165 kg (dry). How much we still don't know.

Inside, we can see a new steering wheel, derived from those used in Formula 1 and integrating the Manettino KERS. It also received a larger screen that integrates a new telemetry system, which allows for easier and clearer access to the various performance parameters and the car's condition.

The Ferrari FXX-K Evo will be one of the protagonists of Program XX for the 2018/2019 season, having already carried out 5000 km of development tests and 15 thousand km of tests related to reliability. The XX Program will go through nine circuits between March and October and, as it is already becoming traditional, they will also be part of the Finali Mondiali weekend, which marks the end of the sporting season.
