Toyota GR Supra 2.0 FUJI SPEEDWAY. Why the less powerful engine for the first limited edition?

Anonim

Toyota's choice was, to say the least, curious. For the first limited edition of the new Toyota GR Supra the Japanese brand opted for the four-cylinder engine, 2.0 liters of 258 hp over the six-cylinder engine, 3.0 liters of 340 hp.

It's called Toyota GR Supra 2.0 FUJI SPEEDWAY, and its name is a tribute to the well-known Japanese circuit, located near the city of Shizuoka.

Was it a good option, choosing the 2.0 liter engine for a special edition?

Differences from the Toyota GR Supra 2.0 FUJI SPEEDWAY

Before jumping to the steering wheel, it should be noted that compared to the normal 2.0 Signature versions, the differences for this Toyota GR Supra 2.0 FUJI SPEEDWAY are purely aesthetic.

On the outside, this version is recognizable by the metallic white paintwork, which contrasts happily with the 19” alloy wheels in matte black and the rear-view mirrors in red. In the cabin, once again, the differences are slim. The dashboard stands out for its carbon fiber inserts and Alcantara upholstery in red and black.

As far as equipment specifications are concerned, the Speedway version includes all the features of the Connect and Sport equipment packages that are available in the GR Supra range.

A matter of pride?

This Fuji Speedway edition was developed to mark the arrival of the 2.0L engine to the GR Supra range — a model we've already tested in this video. Its production is limited to 200 copies, of which only two units were destined for Portugal. By the time you're reading these lines, it's possible they've all been sold.

It was an unusual option on the part of Toyota. Brands usually choose the most powerful versions as the basis for special editions. Here was not the case.

Perhaps because Toyota doesn't look at the GR Supra 2.0 Signature version as a "poor relative" of the GR Supra 3.0 Legacy version.

After more than 2000 km behind the wheel of the new Toyota GR Supra, I have to agree with Toyota. Indeed the 2.0 liter version of the GR Supra is as worthy as the most powerful.

As I argued before, we don't actually have the power and torque of the 3.0 liter engine. The difference of 80 hp and 100 Nm is notorious. But do you know what is also notorious? The least 100 kg in weight of this four-cylinder version.

Differences that are reflected in the way we handle the less powerful version of Supra. We brake later, bring more speed into the curve and have a more agile front. A model that still lets you release the rear (as you can see in the video above).

Which one do I prefer? I prefer the six-cylinder version. Rear drifts come out more easily and are more exuberant. But this Toyota GR Supra 2.0 FUJI SPEEDWAY version is also very satisfying to drive.

The numbers of the less powerful Toyota GR Supra

This is a sports car that is capable of achieving 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. The maximum speed is 250 km/h. All this for CO2 emissions on the WLTP cycle from 156 to 172 g/km.

Does it seem slow to you? It's not slow. I remember that in a sports car, power is not everything.

In fact, the smaller and lighter engine even contributed to the GR Supra's dynamic improvement. This engine makes the GR Supra 2.0 100 kg lighter than the 3.0 liter engine — in addition to the smaller engine, the brake discs are also smaller in diameter at the front among others. Furthermore, as the engine is more compact, it is positioned closer to the center of the GR Supra, which contributes to a 50:50 weight distribution.

As far as the chassis is concerned, regardless of the engine, the Toyota GR Supra always has the same “perfect ratio” (Golden Ratio), a quality defined by the ratio between the wheelbase and the width of the tracks. All versions of the GR Supra have a ratio of 1.55, which is in the ideal range.

All this to say that if you are considering buying a Toyota GR Supra, you will not be disappointed with what this 2.0 liter version has to offer. Either in the Signature version or in this special Fuji Speedway edition.
